I am a massive lover of 90s/early 00s horror films, mostly due to nostalgia as they were the movies I grew up with. In 1998 Urban Legend released and it’s part meta-horror film, part slasher trash, part horror comedy. I loved it when it released, and several years later my interest in it might have changed a bit, but I still greatly enjoy it.

For those that may have missed this gem of a horror flick, it follows Natalie as one by one her friends at college are getting picked off, loosely following the kills of Urban Legends. If you don’t actually know Urban Legends, you might be a bit lost as to what all the references are, but for most people, it’s a smart way to bring up those scary stories we would all tell at sleepovers and parties. Always check the backseat of your car, don’t eat pop rocks and drink soda, don’t turn on the lights if you hear someone moaning.

Natalie early on makes the connection to what is happening, but most people treat her with skepticism to outright calling her a liar because of course, they do it’s a horror film.

In the end, there is a bit of a twist of who the killer is, which is not the most unexpected thing, but I still appreciate all dealing with the killer seeking revenge.

It’s not the best story, I will be the first to admit that, but it’s serviceable enough.

The kills are solid, the idea is creative which I appreciate since it came out during a time when we were getting tons of these movies, and there are a lot of references for horror fans. From the casting including horror favorites to the whole idea of the plot being for people that enjoy the creepy.

In the end, it’s really just a serviceable flick I have to admit. There is nothing about it that makes it a true knock out, but there is nothing bad either. It is not the scariest movie from the time, but it’s far from the worst with some solid enough suspense. It’s not the best story, but it’s not bad.

It is a good slasher trash movie though. It’s entertaining from start to finish and gets the job done. You’ll chuckle at a few parts, be grossed out by others, and enjoy seeing familiar faces and tropes being used cleverly.

If you haven’t watched this one (because so many people did miss it) and are a genre fan I would recommend getting a few friends together, and maybe a few beers, and give it a go. If you have seen it before it might be worth a revisit. It’s one of my personal favorites from growing up, even if I can’t pinpoint exactly why, but I think more people will enjoy it than not.
