It’s Not Inspiration It’s Work

There are a lot of people that want to be writers that simply don’t write. You hear “the curse of writer’s block” and “I’m waiting for inspiration” a lot, and it’s frustrating. Writing, is like any job, you have to work at it. In response to this attitude there are a lot of people that talk about how it’s JUST work, it’s not inspiration it’s work. Frankly I find that attitude equally annoying.

Inspiration is important in ANY job, hobby, activity, etc. It’s the fundamental thing that takes something from passable to something more. It’s the difference between turning in a report that will let you keep your job, and turning in one that will put you up for a promotion or raise. It’s the difference between a B paper in school and A paper. It’s the difference between a good story and a great one.

I don’t believe in waiting around for inspiration, if you want to be a writer WRITE. However this attitude of dismissing all aspects of creativity but the work is dangerous. Sometimes you do have to take a break and wait for inspiration. Sometimes you do have to walk away from one story and write another. Sometimes you do have work on what you know is a throw away while waiting for your creative juices to come back. If I am working on a novel and suddenly don’t feel inspired or motivated for it why would I just pound out subpar words to add to it? Just to say I am working? No, I would rather work on another story, or do some free form writing, or focus my energy on articles/blog posts, or hell even just walk away from writing in general for the rest of the day.

Do not dismiss the importance of inspiration and creativity. I understand the need to take writing seriously and treat writing like work. It is work. Again like ALL work, creativity and inspiration is a key component to it. It helps you put out your best. No you shouldn’t wait around for inspiration, but you shouldn’t dismiss the need for it either.
